    Analysis of China’s Rice Industry in 2022 and the Outlook for 2023

    In 2022, the total production of rice in China has been kept at over 200 million tons for twelve consecutive years with the area decreased slightly, and the yield has declined because of the disaster. The price of rice in the domestic market was stable and then rising, and there were an obvious difference in prices between high quality rice and common rice. Rice imports exceeded the country's import quota for the first time, while a slight decrease in exports was found. The quality structure of varieties was continuously optimized, but the number of varieties approved decreased significantly. The production scale was orderly expand, the green and smart technology in rice production revealed a momentum for rapid growth. It is expected that the rice area will increase slightly, the yield will remain stable, the rice market will rise steadily, high-quality rice will develop rapidly, and smart rice farming will be further promoted in 2023.

    In 2023, the total production of rice in China has been kept at over 200 million tons for 13 consecutive years with the area decreased slightly, and the yield has reached a new record high. The price of rice in the domestic market kept relatively strong, and the rice consumption is basically stable. Rice imports fell sharply and exports continued to decline. The quality level has been continuously improved, but the number of varieties approved decreased. The mode of operation has been continuously optimized, and the promotion of social services, green, efficient, light and simplified technologies and intelligent technologies has been accelerated. Facing problems of rice industry in China were analysed. It is projected that there is going to keep stable in rice area and the yield will increase slightly in 2024, and the rice market will run smoothly, the high-quality rice will develop rapidly.

    Since the 12th Five-Year Plan, the number of certified rice varieties has increased rapidly and the structure types of rice have been gradually optimized. The production area of hybrid rice seed fluctuated greatly with continuous optimization for the structure. The prices of seeds were steadily rising, and the market scale expanded ceaselessly. Both the number and area of the main varieties in the production were declined, while the varieties quality improved significantly. The export of rice seeds fluctuated in a narrow range with a steady growth for the export value. At the same time, the seed industry in China are facing a series of prominent problems, such as low innovation ability of breeding, weak competitiveness of enterprises, low level in seed production, and increasing difficulty for the export of hybrid rice seeds, etc. From the perspective of future development, new technologies such as biological breeding will enter a phase of rapid development, and the application of breakthrough new varieties will be accelerated. The concentration of seed market will be further improved, and the international competitive strategy of hybrid rice will change from product output to technology output.

    Jinyuan U99 is a new japonica fragrant rice variety bred by Tianjin High-quality Agricultural Products Development and Demonstration Center(Tianjin Original Seed Farm). It has the characteristics of salt and alkali resistance, drought resistance, waterlogging resistance, comprehensive stress resistance, saving fertilizer and pesticides. The annual yield and quality of Jinyuan U99 are stable. The general yield is 650.0 kg/667 m2, and it can reach 750.0 kg/667 m2 in high-yield fields. Its rice quality met 1st class of National Standard, the taste is excellent, the amylose content is 14.9%, and the rice polishing rate is 74.1%. In 2019, it was designated as the first batch of the main varieties for the revitalization of Tianjin Xiaozhan rice industry. In 2021, it was awarded the first prize of the National Japonica Rice Appraisal. This paper summarizes its characteristics and high-yield cultivation techniques.

    The rice seed industry is the foundation of China's agricultural development, and seed self-reliance is crucial to food security. Nowadays, China has advantages in traditional rice breeding technology innovation, and has a relatively complete breeding intellectual property protection system. Nonetheless, there is still room for improvement in emerging breeding techniques. In the future, China needs to increase financial support to improve the research and development capabilities of core technologies in the seed industry, as well as the technological innovation capabilities of the rice seed industry.

    In recent years, the area of direct seeding rice has expanded rapidly in China. Combining with the production situation of direct seeding rice at home and abroad, the problems of direct seeding rice in lodging resistance, seedling emergence rate, cold tolerance, weed control and growth period were pointed out, and the breeding strategies of new rice varieties suitable for direct seeding with “moderate growth period, lodging resistance, low temperature tolerance and anaerobic germination tolerance” were put forward.

    Weiliangyou 8612 is a strong advantage hybrid rice combination bred by Yuanlongping Agricultural High-Tech Co., Ltd., Hunan Longping High-Tech Seed Industry Research Institute Co., Ltd. and Hunan Yahua Seed Industry Research Institute. It has the characteristics of ideal plant and leaf morphology, coordinated panicle-grain structure, excellent disease resistance and stress resistance, and high yield potential. In the large-scale demonstration of super rice in 2021 and 2022, the average yield of Weiliangyou 8612 reached 1 114.8 kg/667 m2 and 1 158.8 kg/667 m2 respectively. The article summarized the characteristics of Weiliangyou 8612 and the main points of cultivation techniques for yield 1 100 kg/667 m2.

    Breeding and Application of a New High Yield Fragrant Rice Variety Yuexiang 430 with High Grain Quality

    In order to promote the process of improving the grain quality of rice, Guangdong Province has started to set up a regional trial of fragrant rice group since 2018. Yuexiang 430 was the first batch of fragrant rice varieties tested and successfully approved by Guangdong Provincial Crop Variety Appraisal Committee. Yuexiang 430 is a thermo-sensitive rice variety with moderate plant-type, strong lodging resistance, high yield and fine quality. The results of the regional test showed that the average yield of Yuexiang 430 reached 456.3 kg/667 m2, ranking the first in the regional trail group, which was significantly higher than that of the control variety Meixiangzhan 2. The grain quality of Yuexiang 430 reached the first grade standards of high grain quality rice issued by Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, with amylose 16.2%, length-width ratio 3.3 and aroma (2-AP content 675.0~1 030.9 μg/kg), taste score 84.0~91.0, cooked rice is soft, smooth taste and fragrant, and has won the gold award of the First Conference of Guangdong Rice Industry Development. Yuexiang 430 exhibited strong disease resistance to rice blast in the field tests with leaf blast of grade 1.4~3.0 and neck blast of grade 3.0~3.4, and was easily planted and managed for both early and late cropping seasons in Guangdong Province. Yuexiang 430 has performed well in the trials of Yangshan, Huazhou, Xinhui, Maoming and Nanxiong, etc, in Guangdong Province, and has been used for production and processing in many “Guangdong Simiao Rice” industrial parks, and has an excellent prospect of promotion and application.

    As a high-efficiency, simple, high-yield and economical cultivation mode, ratooning rice has been widely promoted in the main rice areas in the southern China. China has great potential for the development of ratooning rice. The production mode is transforming to mechanization, simplification, standardization and intensification, while the production variety of ratoon rice is changing from high node ratooning type to low node ratooning type. In this paper, the research progress in the heredity of ratooning ability, the construction of evaluation indexes and the breeding of strong regeneration ability rice varieties were reviewed, and the ideas and prospects for the breeding of ratooning rice varieties were put forward.

    Lodging is one of the main limiting factors affecting rice production. It can damage the canopy structure, decrease the leaf photosynthesis rate and increase the population humidity. These undesirable factors could induce fungal diseases, cause spike germination, and then affect the quality and the yield of grain. This paper reviewed the research status of the evaluation methods of rice lodging and inducing causes, the relationship between lodging resistance and the physical and chemical properties of the stem, and the identification and functional study of lodging resistance genes. We compared the characteristics of different rice lodging evaluation methods, analyzed the effects of plant type, field managements including nitrogen fertilizer management, planting density and planting methods, and environmental factors including the gale, rainstorm, and ozone on lodging, summarized the effects of the physical properties and chemical components of stems including cellulose content, lignin content and the number of vascular bundle on lodging, concluded the regulation mechanism of dwarf related genes and cellulose synthesis related genes involved in lodging resistance in rice. In addition, we prospect the future research on lodging resistance and put forward some research suggestions: (1) Innovating and optimizing the evaluation system of rice lodging; (2) Identifying new lodging resistance genes and strengthening the mechanism research of rice lodging resistance; (3) Breeding lodging resistance rice varieties; (4) According to the factors of varieties, cultivation conditions and climate environment, formulating the comprehensive response measures of lodging.

    Breeding and Industrial Development of Water-saving and Drought-resistance Rice

    The Water-saving and drought-resistance rice refers to a new cultivated rice variety type (NY/T 2862-2015). It is formed by integrating the excellent characteristics of modern elite rice cultivar and upland rice variety based on the progress of rice science and technology. With the strong water saving, drought resistance and live broadcast tolerance ability, the WDR could be planted with the green cultivation mode of dry seeding with aerobic management. It could be cultivated not only in paddy fields without flooding, reduce non-point source pollution and methane emissions, but also in dry land or hillside land, which greatly expanded the plant space of rice. This paper briefly introduced the concept and characteristics of WDR, as well as the cultivation and improvement strategies, listed the 23 varieties bred by the unit and their chief characteristics and suitable areas, and discussed the industrial development goals of WDR.

    Breeding of Green Super Rice and its Perspectives

    Food security, environment and natural resources prospect, and green development are major issues in agriculture industry. As a staple food crop, rice plays a vital role in ensuring food security and sustainable development of agriculture. Green Super Rice (GSR) was proposed as a new type rice required resistance to multiple diseases and pests, high nutrient-use efficiency, drought tolerance while exhibiting great stress resilience without compromising grain yield and quality, so as to achieve the goal of “fewer pesticides, fewer fertilizers, reduced irrigation, superior quality and high yield” in rice production. The concept and implementation of GSR have contributed to the development of green agriculture worldwide. The concept, progress and perspectives of GSR are reviewed in this paper.

    Weeds are major reason affecting yield and quality in rice production, and herbicides are the most effective methods in weed control. In recent years, the type of herbicides available on the market has become numerous and varied, the use of commonly used herbicides has increased year by year. The problem of weed resistance caused by long-term and heavy use of single herbicide, as well as food safety and ecological environmental problems caused by herbicide residues, have become increasingly serious, making it difficultly to solve effectively. Developing herbicide-resistant rice varieties is a better choice. This article started with the occurrence and rules of weeds in rice fields, and introduced the control measures for weeds in two planting modes of direct seeding and transplanting, as well as the application status and challenges of commonly used herbicides in rice fields. Then, the paper focused on the latest research progress and application of new herbicide-resistant rice varieties, and looked forward to the development prospects of biotechnology in the creation of herbicide-resistant rice varieties. The aim is to provide a reference for improving the level of weed control in paddy fields, promoting research on herbicide-resistant rice variety breeding, and expanding the application of biotechnology.

    This study systematically investigated the demonstration performance of Exiang 2 in three typical demonstration sites, and summarized its high-yield cultivation techniques with a yield of 600 kg/667 m2. The seeding rates for UAV oerial seeding at 6-7 kg/667 m2 for direct seeding or basic seedlings at 60,000~70,000/667 m2 for mechanical transplanting to ensure a large number of ears. The recommended total amount of nitrogen application was 15-16 kg/667 m2, with N∶P∶K of 2∶1∶1.5. Fertilization strategies mainly rely on basal supplemented by topdressing to ensure balanced nutritional requirements throughout the life cycle. The priority of weed control should be put on “one-time closure, two-time insecticides”, the control methods for pests and diseases focuses on prevention during initial stages. Under this premise, optimal growth period is required to avoid high temperature stress during grain-filling stage, and to maintain longer grain-filling under optimal temperature and healthy growth during the whole growth period, combined with good weather in the later period, which might be an important option to achieve higher yields and quality for this variety.

    The Most Remarkable Varieties in 100 year's Rice Breeding in China

    In a 100 year's rice breeding, Chinese scientists bred a series of high yielding, multi-resistant pest or disease and good quality rice varieties, which were extended and adopted at different rice producing regions, basically solve the food problem of the China’s people. A three-decade period of 1919 to 1949 was marked by the first large-area-adopted variety of Zhongdamaozi, the first variety Zhongshan 1 crossed with wild rice, and the improved variety Nantehao with the largest promotion area. During the period from 1950 to 1979, high-yield rice varieties with short stalks and fertilizer tolerance, such as Aijiao Nante, Zhenzhu Ai 11, Guanglu Ai 4, and Guichao 2 were developed. In 1973, the three-line matching of indica hybrid rice was successfully realized, a high-yield hybrid rice variety Nanyou 2 was developed, and the industrial application of hybrid rice began. In 1978, the promotion area of hybrid rice reached 2.98 million hm2. After 1980, high-yielding varieties such as the conventional rice variety Zhefu 802, the hybrid rice variety Shanyou 63, the two-line hybrid rice variety Liangyoupeijiu have been bred. Entering the 21st century, high-quality, high-yield and multifunctional rice represented by Zhongjiazao 17, Yongyou series varieties has become the dominant variety in China. Looking forward to the future, with the improvement of people's living standards, cultivating high-quality, high-yield and multi-functional varieties with health and environment kindly characteristics will become the main direction of rice breeding.

    Hybrid rice has made great contributions to the food security of China and even the world. But the planting area of hybrid rice in China is declining, the main reason is that the higher cost of seeds restricts the sustainable development of hybrid rice. The traditional production method of hybrid rice seeds has been difficult to meet the current needs of light and simplified rice cultivation. The transformation of hybrid rice seed production from labor-intensive to mechanized seed production is an ideal way to reduce the cost of seed production. This paper summarized the research progress of mechanized seed production of hybrid rice, analyzed the problems faced by mechanized seed production, put forward the technical ways to solve the problems of hybrid rice mechanized seed production combined with the research practice for many years, and prospected the development prospect of mechanized seed production of hybrid rice in the future.

    The dormancy and germination of rice seeds are important agronomic traits to maintain rice yield and quality. Before rice seed harvest, lower dormancy levels easily cause pre-harvest sprouting, resulting in reduced yield and quality. On the other hand, the high degree of dormancy usually leads to a low germination rate and the irregular emergence of rice seeds, which seriously restricts rice's high and stable yield. This paper overall reviewed the research progress of regulation mechanisms of rice seed dormancy and germination in 2020—2023 in China, specifically from the three areas, i.e., plant hormones (abscisic acid, gibberellin, jasmonic acid, auxin, brassinolide, and the cross talk between different hormones), abiotic stress (low temperature stress, salt stress, flooding stress, heavy metal stress, oxidative stress), and pre-harvest sprouting, briefly introduced the research progress abroad, prospected the research trend and direction, and thus aiming to clarify the genetic characteristics and mechanism of seed dormancy and germination, provide a theoretical basis and elite gene resources for the selection of rice varieties with suitable dormancy level.

    The paper overall reviewed the research progress of genetic rule, varieties breeding, seed industries of rice in 2020—2022 in China, briefly comparied the research difference in China and abroad, prospected the research trend and direction.
