    Analysis of China’s Rice Industry in 2022 and the Outlook for 2023

    In 2022, the total production of rice in China has been kept at over 200 million tons for twelve consecutive years with the area decreased slightly, and the yield has declined because of the disaster. The price of rice in the domestic market was stable and then rising, and there were an obvious difference in prices between high quality rice and common rice. Rice imports exceeded the country's import quota for the first time, while a slight decrease in exports was found. The quality structure of varieties was continuously optimized, but the number of varieties approved decreased significantly. The production scale was orderly expand, the green and smart technology in rice production revealed a momentum for rapid growth. It is expected that the rice area will increase slightly, the yield will remain stable, the rice market will rise steadily, high-quality rice will develop rapidly, and smart rice farming will be further promoted in 2023.

    Since the 12th Five-Year Plan, the number of certified rice varieties has increased rapidly and the structure types of rice have been gradually optimized. The production area of hybrid rice seed fluctuated greatly with continuous optimization for the structure. The prices of seeds were steadily rising, and the market scale expanded ceaselessly. Both the number and area of the main varieties in the production were declined, while the varieties quality improved significantly. The export of rice seeds fluctuated in a narrow range with a steady growth for the export value. At the same time, the seed industry in China are facing a series of prominent problems, such as low innovation ability of breeding, weak competitiveness of enterprises, low level in seed production, and increasing difficulty for the export of hybrid rice seeds, etc. From the perspective of future development, new technologies such as biological breeding will enter a phase of rapid development, and the application of breakthrough new varieties will be accelerated. The concentration of seed market will be further improved, and the international competitive strategy of hybrid rice will change from product output to technology output.

    As a high-efficiency, simple, high-yield and economical cultivation mode, ratooning rice has been widely promoted in the main rice areas in the southern China. China has great potential for the development of ratooning rice. The production mode is transforming to mechanization, simplification, standardization and intensification, while the production variety of ratoon rice is changing from high node ratooning type to low node ratooning type. In this paper, the research progress in the heredity of ratooning ability, the construction of evaluation indexes and the breeding of strong regeneration ability rice varieties were reviewed, and the ideas and prospects for the breeding of ratooning rice varieties were put forward.

    In 2023, the total production of rice in China has been kept at over 200 million tons for 13 consecutive years with the area decreased slightly, and the yield has reached a new record high. The price of rice in the domestic market kept relatively strong, and the rice consumption is basically stable. Rice imports fell sharply and exports continued to decline. The quality level has been continuously improved, but the number of varieties approved decreased. The mode of operation has been continuously optimized, and the promotion of social services, green, efficient, light and simplified technologies and intelligent technologies has been accelerated. Facing problems of rice industry in China were analysed. It is projected that there is going to keep stable in rice area and the yield will increase slightly in 2024, and the rice market will run smoothly, the high-quality rice will develop rapidly.

    The Most Remarkable Varieties in 100 year's Rice Breeding in China

    In a 100 year's rice breeding, Chinese scientists bred a series of high yielding, multi-resistant pest or disease and good quality rice varieties, which were extended and adopted at different rice producing regions, basically solve the food problem of the China’s people. A three-decade period of 1919 to 1949 was marked by the first large-area-adopted variety of Zhongdamaozi, the first variety Zhongshan 1 crossed with wild rice, and the improved variety Nantehao with the largest promotion area. During the period from 1950 to 1979, high-yield rice varieties with short stalks and fertilizer tolerance, such as Aijiao Nante, Zhenzhu Ai 11, Guanglu Ai 4, and Guichao 2 were developed. In 1973, the three-line matching of indica hybrid rice was successfully realized, a high-yield hybrid rice variety Nanyou 2 was developed, and the industrial application of hybrid rice began. In 1978, the promotion area of hybrid rice reached 2.98 million hm2. After 1980, high-yielding varieties such as the conventional rice variety Zhefu 802, the hybrid rice variety Shanyou 63, the two-line hybrid rice variety Liangyoupeijiu have been bred. Entering the 21st century, high-quality, high-yield and multifunctional rice represented by Zhongjiazao 17, Yongyou series varieties has become the dominant variety in China. Looking forward to the future, with the improvement of people's living standards, cultivating high-quality, high-yield and multi-functional varieties with health and environment kindly characteristics will become the main direction of rice breeding.

    Nutritional Quality Evaluation of Different Rice Varieties Based on Principal Component Analysis and Cluster Analysis

    In order to evaluate the nutritional quality of different colored whole rice grains, 3 red, 8 black and 8 non-pigmented rice grains were selected, 5 basic nutritional parameters, 13 elements and 9 bioactive components were detected, and principal component and cluster analysis were used as data analysis and quality evaluation methods. The results showed that the contents of total starch, dietary fiber and fat of different rice varieties fluctuated in a small range. The range of element contents of colored rice was larger than that of non-pigmented rice. There was a very significant correlation among total phenolic, flavonoid content, ABTS and DPH antioxidant activity, the contents of total phenolic and flavonoid in colored rice were significantly higher than in non-pigmented rice, and the contents in most black rice were significantly higher than those in red rice. The contents of total anthocyanin, cyaidin-3-O-glucoside and peonidin-3-O-glucoside in black rice were higher. The principal component analysis of basic nutritional parameters and elements divided all the nutritional quality into six components which could explain about 80% of the total variances. The cluster analysis of all the tested parameters in 19 samples divided all the samples into colored rice and non-pigmented brown rice. It also divided all the parameters into 5 categories as two categories of elements, one category of bioactive compounds and two categories of basic nutritional parameters. The results of this study can provide a scientific basis for evaluating the nutritional quality of rice, and also provide new ideas for the production of new functional rice products.

    Breeding and Development of High-quality Hybrid Rice in South China

    In this paper, the development of high-quality hybrid rice varieties in south China, including two stages, were summarized. The first stage is the development of high-quality hybrid rice with medium amylose content(AC). During this period, eight male sterile lines of rice with better grain shape, less chalkiness and good transparency, such as Bo A, Qiu A, Mei A, Yuetai A, Tianfeng A, Wufeng A, Rongfeng A and Jifeng A, were bred, and 149 high-quality hybrid rice varieties with medium amylose content, such as Boyou 998, Tianyou 998, and Wuyou 308, were developed by using these 8 male sterile lines as female parent. In addition, 9 two-line hybrid rice varieties with fine quality, such as Peizashuangqi, Peizataifeng, etc., were also developed by using P/G MS line Pei’ai64S. The second stage is the development stage of high-quality hybrid rice with low amylose content, and 13 high-quality sterile lines including Yuefeng A, Taifeng A, Yexiang A, Guang 8A, and Toyota 1A have been bred, and totally about 212 high-quality hybrid rice varieties with low amylose content, such as Taifengyou 208, Yexiangyou Lisi, and Fengtianyou 553, were developed by using these 15 male sterile lines as female parent. Moreover, Huazhan and Bing 4114 and 8 high-yield and disease-resistant and high-quality conventional rice, such as Wushansimiao, Yuenongsimiao, Wushanyouzhan, were used as restorer lines, and 175 high-quality hybrid rice varieties have been developed and released for commercial production. Since 2015, averagely more than half of the top ten hybrid rice varieties of annual planting area in China, were bred or cooperatively bred by using the MS lines or restore lines developed in south China. The improvement of rice grain quality and breeding in south China played an important role in development of high-quality hybrid rice production. In the end, the current problems of high-quality hybrid rice varieties in south China and the prospects of breeding were discussed.

    In this paper, the historical background and the corresponding policy of the development of high-quality rice in Hunan province was introduced in more detail, and the process of high-quality rice varieties research since the Reform and Opening up was reviewed. According to the focus of research, the process was divided into four stages, and the representative varieties and their characteristics of each stage were also elaborated. In addition, this paper also summarized the achievements in the breeding of varieties, evaluation systems, supporting technologies and industrialization of high-quality rice research in Hunan province in the past 40 years, analyzed the current problems of high-quality rice in Hunan, and put forward some suggestions on future development.

    The rice seed industry is the foundation of China's agricultural development, and seed self-reliance is crucial to food security. Nowadays, China has advantages in traditional rice breeding technology innovation, and has a relatively complete breeding intellectual property protection system. Nonetheless, there is still room for improvement in emerging breeding techniques. In the future, China needs to increase financial support to improve the research and development capabilities of core technologies in the seed industry, as well as the technological innovation capabilities of the rice seed industry.

    Hybrid rice has made great contributions to the food security of China and even the world. But the planting area of hybrid rice in China is declining, the main reason is that the higher cost of seeds restricts the sustainable development of hybrid rice. The traditional production method of hybrid rice seeds has been difficult to meet the current needs of light and simplified rice cultivation. The transformation of hybrid rice seed production from labor-intensive to mechanized seed production is an ideal way to reduce the cost of seed production. This paper summarized the research progress of mechanized seed production of hybrid rice, analyzed the problems faced by mechanized seed production, put forward the technical ways to solve the problems of hybrid rice mechanized seed production combined with the research practice for many years, and prospected the development prospect of mechanized seed production of hybrid rice in the future.

    Breeding and Industrial Development of Water-saving and Drought-resistance Rice

    The Water-saving and drought-resistance rice refers to a new cultivated rice variety type (NY/T 2862-2015). It is formed by integrating the excellent characteristics of modern elite rice cultivar and upland rice variety based on the progress of rice science and technology. With the strong water saving, drought resistance and live broadcast tolerance ability, the WDR could be planted with the green cultivation mode of dry seeding with aerobic management. It could be cultivated not only in paddy fields without flooding, reduce non-point source pollution and methane emissions, but also in dry land or hillside land, which greatly expanded the plant space of rice. This paper briefly introduced the concept and characteristics of WDR, as well as the cultivation and improvement strategies, listed the 23 varieties bred by the unit and their chief characteristics and suitable areas, and discussed the industrial development goals of WDR.

    Weeds are major reason affecting yield and quality in rice production, and herbicides are the most effective methods in weed control. In recent years, the type of herbicides available on the market has become numerous and varied, the use of commonly used herbicides has increased year by year. The problem of weed resistance caused by long-term and heavy use of single herbicide, as well as food safety and ecological environmental problems caused by herbicide residues, have become increasingly serious, making it difficultly to solve effectively. Developing herbicide-resistant rice varieties is a better choice. This article started with the occurrence and rules of weeds in rice fields, and introduced the control measures for weeds in two planting modes of direct seeding and transplanting, as well as the application status and challenges of commonly used herbicides in rice fields. Then, the paper focused on the latest research progress and application of new herbicide-resistant rice varieties, and looked forward to the development prospects of biotechnology in the creation of herbicide-resistant rice varieties. The aim is to provide a reference for improving the level of weed control in paddy fields, promoting research on herbicide-resistant rice variety breeding, and expanding the application of biotechnology.

    Jiangsu is one of the main rice producing provinces in China. In recent years, the rice planting area is about 2.2 million hm2, the total yield of about 19.5 million tons and the yield per unit is nearly 9.0 t/hm2. It plays an important role in ensuring the food security of Jiangsu and even the whole country. For a long time, the main goal of rice breeding in Jiangsu Province has been high yield. After entering the 21th century, high quality has become the primary goal of rice breeding in Jiangsu Province. This paper summarized the background of high-quality rice breeding in Jiangsu Province, the approach of improving eating quality and the progress of good eating japonica rice breeding, and analyzed the enlightenment of good eating quality japonica rice breeding and the development direction of eating quality improvement and high-quality breeding of rice in Jiangsu Province in the future, so as to provide enlightenment and reference for the rice breeders.

    In recent years, the area of direct seeding rice has expanded rapidly in China. Combining with the production situation of direct seeding rice at home and abroad, the problems of direct seeding rice in lodging resistance, seedling emergence rate, cold tolerance, weed control and growth period were pointed out, and the breeding strategies of new rice varieties suitable for direct seeding with “moderate growth period, lodging resistance, low temperature tolerance and anaerobic germination tolerance” were put forward.

    The main type of indica-japonica hybrid rice was bred by the japonica CMS line as female parent and the wide-compatibility indica restore line as male parent. The first typical japonica-indica hybrid rice Yongyou 6 was bred by crossing japonica CMS Yongjing 2A and indica restore K4806 in Zhejiang province. In recent year, a number of influential japonica-indica hybrid rice were bred by the similar breeding mode with obvious yield advantages and were welcomed by farmers. This article reviewed the history of indica-japonica rice research, focusing on the present situation of utilization of heterosis between japonica CMS lines and the wide-compatibility indica restore lines, in order to provide a useful reference for the future research on the utilization of heterosis between indica and japonica rice subspecies.

    The sterile line is the “chip” of hybrid rice. No matter the three-line or the two-line hybrid rice, the continuous breakthrough of rice variety development depends on the discovery and continuous innovation of sterile line germplasm. Since the discovery of Nongken 58S, a photoperiod sensitive male-sterile rice(PGMR), the two-line hybrid rice has occupied half of the area of hybrid rice extension in China after 50 years research. In this paper, we summarized the breeding process and main achievements of the photoperiod/thermo- sensitive genic male-sterile(P/TGMS)lines in China, as well as our progresses of TGMS lines development, and put forward the main direction of research and development for future P/TGMS lines.

    Advance and Prospect of Rice Genetics and Breeding Research in 2020—2022 in China

    The paper overall reviewed the research progress of genetic rule, varieties breeding, seed industries of rice in 2020—2022 in China, briefly comparied the research difference in China and abroad, prospected the research trend and direction. In terms of research on the evolution of rice varieties, it was found that high yield, plant morphological dominance, and resistant haplotypes resistant to biological stress are critical factors for extensive area planting of primary types of indica rice, while early maturity and resistant haplotypes resistant to abiotic stress are vital factors for vast area planting of primary varieties of japonica rice; The world's first redesigned and rapidly domesticated tetraploid rice were created, achieving a breakthrough of "from 0 to 1" and opening up a new direction for crop breeding; An intelligent rice breeding navigation program has been developed, with great potential for application in the rapid cultivation of new rice varieties; Many new breeding theories and methods have been innovated, and several new breeding techniques have been invented. Over the past three years, 6 177 varieties (sterile male lines) have been bred and approved, 61.4% of which were bred by enterprises.

    Research Progress and Prospect of Slow and Controlled Release Fertilizer Application Technology in Rice

    As a new type of fertilizer, slow and controlled release nitrogen fertilizer has been shown significant advantages in improving rice yield and nitrogen use efficiency and mitigating environmental pollution, taking into account both yield increase and environmental friendliness. On the basis of previous studies, the concept, classification and mechanism of different slow and controlled release nitrogen fertilizers, and the characteristics and effects of different fertilization techniques formed by them in rice production were summarized, such as one-time fertilization with slow-release nitrogen fertilizer, one-time base application mixed with fast-acting urea, different slow-and-controlled-release nitrogen fertilizers being mixed with each other and applied once, and the fertilization technology being applied in batches with fast-acting urea. The effects of different application technologies of slow and controlled-release nitrogen fertilizer on rice yield formation, as well on soil and atmospheric environment were introduced. The advantages of slow-release nitrogen fertilizers in rice production were clarified, and the problems existing in the application were further pointed out and relevant suggestions were put forward, so as to provide a certain reference for promoting the wide application of slow-release nitrogen fertilizers in rice production.

    The standard of cooking rice variety quality played a positive role in enhancing the people's rice quality consciousness and promoting the improvement of rice quality in China. In order to fully understand the standard of cooking rice variety quality and its role in the rice quality improvement, we systematically analyzed the development of standard based on successive editions and discussed the trends of the high quality rate of rice in China, for providing references for the cultivation and industrial development of high-quality rice varieties in the 14th Five-year Plan period in China.

    Perennial rice is an innovative rice type bred by the inter-specific hybridization between Oryza sativa and O. longistaminata which was 20 years′ effort of one group in Yunnan University and could realize once planting as multiple harvest via regrowing new tillers from its rhizome buds without tillage over year. Till now, the group proved preliminarily the inheritance of rhizome of O. longistaminata, invented a patent of the method of breeding for perennial rice using the vegetative propagation characteristics of the rhizome of O. longistaminata.
